The Republican Party, also commonly called the GOP (for "Grand Old Party"), is one of the two major contemporary political parties in the United States, the other being the Democrat Party. Founded by anti-slavery activists in 1854, it dominated politics nationally for most of the period from 1860 to 1932. The party's platform is generally based upon American conservatism, in contrast to the Democrat Party, whose members endorse more liberal policies. American conservatism of the Republican Party is not wholly based upon rejection of the political ideology of liberalism; some principles of American conservatism are based upon classical liberalism. Rather, the Republican Party's conservatism is largely based upon its support of classical principles against the modern liberalism of the Democrat Party that is considered American liberalism in contemporary American political discourse.

MOMENTS IN HISTORY

 

It began in a little schoolhouse in Ripon, Wisconsin, in 1854. A small group of dedicated abolitionists gathered to fight the expansion of slavery, and they gave birth to a Party dedicated to freedom and equal opportunity.

 

The name “Republican” was chosen, alluding to Thomas Jefferson’s Democratic-Republican Party and conveying a commitment to the inalienable rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.

 

The Party was formally organized in July 1854 by thousands of anti-slavery activists at a convention in Jackson, Michigan. And it was no accident that two years later, in 1856, the first Republican National Convention took place in Philadelphia, where the Constitution was written.

We are a group of Dublin, Ohio residents taking a few moments outside of our busy jobs and family lives to hold our elected leaders accountable to their oath to protect and defend the U.S. Constitution.

 

As good citizens it is important that we each spend a few drops of our time and treasure to oppose those who seek an ever-expanding role for government in our daily lives.

To provide an opportunity for Republican Voters to work for the betterment of the Republican Party locally and nationally.

 

To develop intelligent and aggressive programs which shall promote the political understanding and participation of its members.

 

To assist and cooperate with local, state, and national organizations to promote candidates and polices of merit.
